When looking for a first car it's important to try and find something fuel efficient, affordable, reliable and, above all, safe. Nothing ticks all those boxes better than a quality new car bought from an official dealership that you can trust. But which one should you choose?

To help make your decision easier we put together a list of three of our favourite first cars – all starting at under $20,000 drive away.

1. Suzuki Swift

Canstar Blue has rated Suzuki the top small car marque in Australia in terms of customer satisfaction for three years running. The marque's most popular car is the iconic Suzuki Swift, a vehicle that embodies Suzuki's commitment to value, safety and reliability.

The 2019 Suzuki Swift has been redesigned, sporting a more modern look and an impressive array of driving technology. Under the hood there's a 1.2 litre dualjet engine that ensures the car's throttle is responsive and zippy.

Inside there's a seven-inch touchscreen featuring Bluetooth connectivity, hands free phone, navigation systems and much more. There's even six airbags, Advanced Forward Detection, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control – features that have earned the car a five star ANCAP safety rating.

2. Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto is Australia's best selling micro car and it's not hard to see why. All new it starts at under $15,000, plus it's great to drive and packed with features, making it one of the best value cars money can buy.

Despite the low price point the car has a seven-inch touchscreen with all the bells and whistles including Bluetooth connectivity. Dusk-Sensing Headlights that turn on automatically, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Cruise Control (with speed limiter) also come as standard.

Apart from its price point our favourite thing about this little car is its design, for which it's won two international awards. Its honeycomb grill and slanting bodykit give it far more attitude than your average small car.

3. Renault Clio

The Renault Clio is one of the most attractive small cars you can buy thanks to curved lines, distinctive grill and unique European styling. It also boasts an impressive array of smart features that make driving easier and more fun. Despite all that it still starts at just $19,999 drive away.

The standard model comes with four 20-watt speakers, automatic windscreen wipers, LED daytime running lights, rear parking sensors and camera, and so much more. The Intens version even features hands-free parking, so that you never struggle to fit into a tight spot again.

A six-speed automatic transmission harnesses the car's generous 118 hp engine, which is plenty powerful to ensure a fun and quick drive. What's more, the engine features a Stop and Start feature that turns the motor off when at a standstill to preserve fuel and increase efficiency.
