Gen Y drivers urged to check tyres

January 2012

One in five Generation Y drivers are neglecting their car tyres, according to a new survey.

An independent consumer study by Canstar Blue has found that while eight per cent of Australian motorists had their car defected by balding tyres, the problem was more prominent among younger drivers.

Just three per cent of Baby Boomers reported inadequate tyre care, while the number rose to 11 per cent among drivers aged in their 30s and 40s.

Canstar Blue manager Rebecca Logan asserted that ample tread on tyres - which helps disperse water and grip the road - should be a priority for motorists.

"Bald tyres can lead to tyre failure, punctures and can impact on your ability to steer and break effectively - it can even cause issues with fuel mileage," she explained (January 19).

Ms Logan suggested that ideally motorists should check their tyres once a month and before long trips.

"Most modern tyres have tread-wear indicator bars running across the tread which indicate the minimum allowable tread depth."

"When the tread is worn down to these bars it's time for new tyres – it is as simple as that."
