New cars need some TLC too

October 2011

There is a common misconception that once a new car is purchased, you won't have to look under the bonnet for a while.

However, even new cars need their oil levels checked regularly. Checking your car's oil will not only ensure that it is running correctly, but it will also extend the life of your engine - this is in addition to regular car servicing.

To do so, park the car on level ground in a well-lit area, and have some paper towels or a rags on hand. Momentarily wait for the oil to settle, and pull the dipstick - usually orange in colour and marked 'oil' - out and wipe the end clean. Re-insert the dipstick into the engine, ensuring it goes all the way in.

Carefully remove the dipstick again, and locate the two markings on the bottom of the stick. If the level appears below the lowest marking, your car requires more oil.

Never add more than a litre of oil at a time without driving and taking a new reading - this allows the oil to settle and confirms an accurate reading.

If you are ever hesitant about what is going on under the hood of your car, seek assistance at a car service centre.
